Broadband Used by 1 in 10 Net Users in the UK

One in 10 home Internet users in the UK now use broadband connections, while 90 percent of all Net users say they are happy with the services they buy, according to regulatory agency Oftel. In its Monday release, Oftel notes there are 30,000 new broadband subscriptions every week and currently over 1.4 million households with high-speed Internet access. David Edmonds, Oftel director general, said consumers still benefit from "good deals on unmetered dial-up access." The government, BT and others have long maintained low broadband penetration rates in the UK are partly due to the low prices of narrowband offerings.

Broadwing said it has hired advisers to help sell its national fiber optic network. The company expects to take a $2 billion fourth-quarter charge to write-off its broadband assets, basically undoing a 1999 acquisition that had aimed to make the then-slow-growing company more attractive to growth-oriented tech investors. With a glut in fiber, a sale won’t come easy. But any deal would help Broadwing work with its bankers to amend its 2004 maturity dates on its credit facility. The company must secure an amended credit facility before it can earn a new $350 million financing package. Broadwing reiterated its 2002 revenue projection of $2.15 billion, but said it would not release its fourth-quarter earnings until after it has closed its negotiations with its bankers.
