In an attempt to placate regulators, EchoStar and Hughes sent a letter asking FCC chairman Michael Powell to delay the commission's decision on the merger.

Murdoch's Behind the Scenes Efforts to Kill EchoStar-Hughes Merger

According the Wall Street Journal, Rupert Murdoch decided to fight the merger plans between EchoStar and Hughes discreetly through grass-roots efforts rather than public challenges. By hiring former NY state AG Robert Abrams, aggressively working state's attorney generals, lobbying state's public utility commissions and meeting with trade groups like the National Religious Broadcasters, Murdoch has created a coalition of voices in opposition to the deal and may get a second chance at DirecTV.

If Merger is Approved, Cablevision Could Benefit

One of the key issues in the approval process of the EchoStar -DirecTV merger is the resulting reduction in competition-especially in rural areas. Cablevision's plans to launch a competing DTH satellite tv service could benefit if the satellite merger is approved.
