Tiscali UK Announces Start of Consumer Broadband Satellite TrialsTiscali UK, a subsidiary of Tiscali SpA., headquartered in Cagliari, Italy., today announced a three-month national trial of its two-way broadband satellite Internet service. The commercial launch is due to take place in Spring 2002. "This launch further demonstrates that Tiscali is dedicated to providing a wide range of access choices to its customers, wherever they are," says Sergio Cellini, CEO of Tiscali UK. "Satellite access gives us independence from incumbent telecommunications operators in Europe and enables us to develop products and services of higher value and competitive price." Two-way satellite service offer users Internet access speeds up to 10 times higher than normal modem speeds, a persistent or "always on" connection that saves time when connecting to the Internet, and eliminates the need for a telephone line dedicated for Internet use. The service, when fully launched, will support multi-PC connectivity. Tiscali's two-way satellite service exceeds the geographic limitations of ADSL and cable based technology by reaching areas not able to access other high-speed services. The service will also provide customers with the ability to download rich media, audio and video. The trial will be available to a limited number of customers and is designed to test the service and customer feedback in advance of a commercial launch. Consumers taking part in the trial are expected to pay a GBP 230 installation fee but will be given a three months free trial period worth GBP 59.99 per month. Should triallists decide to continue with the two way satellite service then they will be expected to pay for the equipment at the end of the evaluation period. The satellite equipment is expected to retail for GBP 650, payable over 12 months or in one payment. Tech Leaders Urge U.S. to Reach Goal of 100 Mbps for 100M Households by 2010Technology leaders represented by the Palo Alto, California-based Technology Network (TechNet) are urging Congress and the White House to push broadband access and make it a national priority. The group, which represents about 300 companies and venture capital firms, wants to set a goal of having 100M bit/sec. connections available in 100 million U.S. households by 2010 and is not seeking tax incentives or preferences for its members. Globecomm Systems Named One of Long Island's Fastest Growing Technology Companies in 2001 by Deloitte & ToucheGlobecomm Systems Inc., a supplier of end-to-end satellite-based communications solutions, has been named to Deloitte & Touche's "Fast 50" Program for Long Island, a ranking of the 50 fastest growing technology companies in the area. Rankings are based on the percentage of growth in revenues from 1996-2000. "The Fast 50 Program recognizes and honors the fastest growing regional technology companies whose leaders have the vision and determination to beat the odds and build companies that contribute to the world with long term solutions," said Adam Weisman, Long Island Office Managing Partner of Deloitte & Touche. The average increase in revenues among companies who made the Fast 50 Program for this region was approximately 105 percent. Globecomm's 482 percent increase in revenues over the five-year period of 1996 to 2000 is the result of growth in revenue from $13.5 million to $78.6 million for that period. This earned Globecomm the number 6 ranking overall in the Fast 50 for Long Island. To qualify for the Fast 50 Program, companies must have had operating revenues of at least $50,000 in 1996 and $1,000,000 in 2000, and must be a public or private technology company headquartered in Long Island. The Fast 50 Program defines a "technology company" as a business that produces technology, manufactures a technology product, or devotes a high percentage of effort to research and development of technology. Winners of the 22 regional Fast 50 Programs in the United States and Canada are automatically entered in the Deloitte & Touche Technology Fast 500 Program, which ranks the nation's top 500 fastest growing technology companies. Hughes Network Systems Adds First DIRECWAY Partner in CanadaLinCsat Communications Inc. and Hughes Network Systems (HNS), today announced an agreement to offer DIRECWAY(R) high-speed Internet broadband services to government, commercial, small office/home office (SOHO), and residential customers in Canada. "LinCsat Powered by DIRECWAY" will be launched in Canada in the first quarter of 2002. The service will be marketed by LinCsat directly, and through a network of value-added resellers and independent retailers serving rural and underserved communities nationwide. "For the first time communities, offices and teleworkers in Canada, no matter how remote, will have access to high-speed Internet connectivity at affordable prices using the LinCsat Powered by DIRECWAY solution," said Brian Neill, chief executive officer at LinCsat. "We are very excited to partner with Hughes and offer a broadband alternative to the nearly three million Canadian households and one million businesses that are underserved by the major telephone, cable and Internet service companies. LinCsat is exclusively focused on these markets." "As the leader in broadband satellite services, we are excited to bring DIRECWAY's capabilities to LinCsat," said Dave Zatloukal, vice president of DIRECWAY services for HNS. "This relationship in Canada furthers our global strategy to partner with selected "Powered by DIRECWAY" service providers." "After an extensive review of various satellite service alternatives, it became clear to us that existing "out-of-the-box" solutions wouldn't allow us to address the cultural, linguistic and security requirements of the Canadian market," said David Lewis, president and chief operating officer at LinCsat. "Our unique arrangement with Hughes for the "LinCsat Powered by DIRECWAY" service allows us the flexibility to create a truly pan-Canadian service." The FCC Formally Approves RealignmentThe FCC on Thursday, formally approved most of its agency realignment with the consent of the four commissioners and approval of the National Treasury Employees Union Local 209. When Ken Ferree, formerly the Cable Bureau Chief and now the Media Bureau Chief under the realignment, hit slide 10 of his presentation, he was questioned about his claim that 70% of all U.S. houses had access to cable broadband service. He clarified by saying that while not every home was subscribing to broadband, broadband cable providers reported that their fiber passed most homes. "Well, when you say they go past my house, you're exactly right," Commissioner Copps replied to laughter. Copps said broadband wasn't yet available to residents in his area. Chairman Powell agreed, saying he couldn't get broadband either. "Message to Cox: Get to us!" Powell said. |
